Celebration of Eid-al-Fitr and End of Ramadan

Overview

On June 26, 2017, the West Africa GEOHealth Hub joined the global Muslim community in marking the joyous celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, signaling the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In a gesture of solidarity, appreciation, and cultural respect, members of the GEOHealth West Africa research team celebrated this important occasion with the Muslim community at the Agbogbloshie scrap yard — a key location for the Hub’s ongoing environmental and occupational health studies.

The team visited the site to share in the festivities and personally express gratitude to the community for their ongoing support and participation in the Hub’s research activities. Warm wishes were exchanged, and a variety of food and beverages were provided to the workers and residents, fostering a spirit of friendship and mutual respect.

As part of the celebration, the research team also extended their appreciation to community leaders from Agbogbloshie and Madina Zongo, both of whom have played pivotal roles in facilitating the Hub’s fieldwork and engagement efforts. Specially prepared hampers were presented to the leaders as tokens of gratitude for their cooperation, hospitality, and guidance throughout the research process.

This event highlighted the GEOHealth Hub’s commitment not only to scientific research but also to meaningful community partnership. By honoring local traditions and maintaining respectful, inclusive relationships, the Hub continues to build a strong foundation for sustainable health research in West Africa.
